In 2013, Greece commemorated the centenary of the union of Crete with the mother country and marked this important historical event with a commemorative €2 coin. This step held enormous symbolic importance for national unity and the strengthening of Greek identity. The coin’s motif is dedicated to the event and refers to the rich history of the island of Crete.
