The Vatican 2 Euro Coin 2025 “550th Anniversary of the Birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti” is issued in Proof quality. The commemorative issue is dedicated to one of the greatest geniuses of the Italian Renaissance – sculptor, painter and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The coin design features the Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, an architectural masterpiece designed by Michelangelo and one of the most recognisable symbols of Christianity. Below the dome appears a reference to the structure of the vault of the Sistine Chapel, which Michelangelo famously decorated with his monumental frescoes. On the left, his autograph signature “Michelagniolo” is reproduced from original historical documents.
The issue celebrates Michelangelo not only as an extraordinary sculptor, painter and architect, but also as an artist whose work profoundly connected art, spirituality and the Christian faith.
